The Basics
So you made it into Medical School!

This first year might be frightening, but you have our support along the way so don't worry.

What do I need first?

During your first year, you won't require things like scrubs or a stethoscope as you won't be seeing patients around the hospital. But a few things you will need include:
-
Student ID - issued by the university within a couple of weeks of starting. You will need this for public transport to get reduced/ulgowy fares. (Note: Before receiving your student card you should continue to purchase normal/normalny fares on public transport.)
-
Anatomy essentials - Lab coat and hat, forceps and enclosed shoes, see here for more details
-
Textbooks - see our guide
-
Writing materials for lectures and coloured pencils for Histology, it is a bit like art class, if art class-tested you on in-depth Histological information.
-
Enthusiasm and Teamwork!

Dress Code

In the past first years have wondered whether or not there is a strict dress code. In general, the university is quite relaxed compared to countries like the USA, Australia or the UK. In the wards, you can get away with jeans and a t-shirt, however, be sure to avoid anything that may be offensive or unprofessional looking. It is probably a bad idea to wear track pants whilst on the wards. Use common sense and you should get by fine.

You will be required to wear enclosed shoes on the wards, these being shoes that you only wear inside the hospital. Jewellery should be removed when in surgery classes. During the winter, you will be required to leave your coats in designated student cloakrooms. Otherwise, for your lectures and seminars that are not in the hospital, you can wear more or less what you like.

It is worth mentioning that Polish people treat exams as a formal occasionally, and if you ever take a commission exam orally (AKA the last retake of a final exam - the vast majority of you would not encounter this), it is recommended to wear something on the formal side.

Curriculum & Timetable

We cannot stress this enough - READ THE CURRICULUM! It will tell you what is expected of you, and how you will be examined. It will also mention your recommended textbooks (it is however recommended to get books after you attend your first classes as not every book on the syllabus will be used).

Your curriculum can be found on the English Divisions' main website along with the timetable. The timetables aren’t that easy to read so it is a good idea to break it down week by week.

Usually in the timetable will give a department code, for example, Department of Anatomy (1M12). You can use this to search for the contact details of the department on this website.

Timetables are subject to change, and make sure to keep yourself updated.

Matriculation

During your first week, following orientation, there will be a ceremony to welcome you to the university. This includes the Polish Division students and is a formal event. Students are asked to dress formally (suits, dress shirt, or a nice dress). A lot of the ceremony will be in Polish, but there is a choir which is somewhat entertaining. Details about this event will be released during orientation. During the hours of matriculation classes are cancelled.
Matriculation 2022/2023 will take place October 7th, 2022 at 11:00 (Aula A&B, Didactic Center) - subject to change.
