Applying to Australia

Australia is a country that a lot of people would like to eventually work in. With some of the best working conditions and highest salaries it is a very attractive option. However, unless you are Australian and/or have graduated from an Australian university you will not be able to gain an internship in Australia. The best plan would be to go following a one or two year internship elsewhere.

The registering body in Australia is AHPRA and detailed information can be found here. Once you are recognised by AHPRA the next stage is getting working visas which for doctors is generally quite easy.

There are three pathways for gaining registration:

  • Standard Pathway

  • Competent Authority Pathway

  • Specialist Pathway

For MUW graduates you will either come under the Standard or Competent Authority Pathways.

Standard Pathway

This pathway can be for anyone seeking registration who doesn't come under the competent authority pathway. This can be with or without an internship. The Australian Medical Council conducts the examinations for this pathway.

There are two alternatives to this pathway:

  • AMC examinations:

    • AMC CAT MCQ + AMC Clinical Examinations

    • Without an internship you only need AMC CAT MCQ (but this is generally not a possibility for us)

    • These examinations are essentially the equivalent of USMLE Step 2 CK and CS.

  • Workplace Based Assessment

    • AMC CAT MCQ + workplace based assessment of clinical skills in an accredited hospital. These hospitals are in rural communities and spaces are quite limited

Competent Authority Pathway

There are several options under this pathway but they are essentially as follows:

  • PLAB + Successful completion of Foundation Year 1

  • Medical Council of Canada (LMCC) exam + 12 months training in Canada

  • USMLE (all parts) + 2 years of graduate training in the US

  • New Zealand registration exam + Completion of NZ internship

Unfortunately, UK/EEA nationals are exempt from undertaking the PLAB so even with Foundation Year 1 in the UK you would still need to complete the Standard Pathway.
